in der Tat einer meiner liebsten Kalendersprüche, dem nichts hinzuzufügen ist. Achten Sie einfach mal in Ihrem Umfeld und vielleicht auch bei sich selbst drauf.
Interessant ist, woher das Zitat eigentlich kommt. Im Englischen gibt es verschiedene Abwandlungen davon, die gebräuchlichsten sind:
You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.
Character is how you treat those who can do nothing for you.
You can easily judge the character of others by how they treat those who can do nothing for them or to them.
Häufig wird das Zitat Johann Wolfgang von Goethe zugeschrieben, wofür es aber keinerlei Belege gibt. Sollte Goethe das tatsächlich gesagt haben, wäre das Zitat hierzulande wohl auch bekannter.
Tatsächlich stammt das Zitat in dieser Form wohl von Malcolm S. Forbes. So taucht es in seinem Buch The Sayings of Chairman Malcolm: The Capitalist’s Handbook
(1978) auf, er soll es aber schon 1972 gesagt und geschrieben haben.
Inspiriert ist der Gedanke aber wohl von älteren Quellen. So soll der englische Prediger Charles Haddon Spurgeon bereits 1876 folgendes gesagt haben:
I think you may judge of a man’s character by the persons whose affection he seeks. If you find a man seeking only the affection of those who are great, depend upon it he is ambitious and self-seeking; but when you observe that a man seeks the affection of those who can do nothing for him, but for whom he must do everything, you know that he is not seeking himself, but that pure benevolence sways his heart.
Und der amerikanische Autor Paul Eldridge schrieb 1948 folgendes:
A man’s character is most evident by how he treats those who are not in a position either to retaliate or reciprocate.
Eine weitere Abwandlung findet sich in einer Kolumne von Abigail van Buren (Pseudonym von Pauline Esther Friedman), die 1974 veröffentlicht wurde:
We’ve all known animal lovers who lavish an excessive amount of affection on pets, but who are cruel to people. The best index to a person’s character is (a) how he treats people who can’t do him any good, and (b) how he treats people who can’t fight back.
1975 wandelte sie das Motto ab und vereinfachte es:
Make a mental note of it. You can tell a great deal about a person by observing how he treats someone who can’t do him any good.
Dies wurde von vielen amerikanischen Zeitungskolumnen mehr oder weniger verändert übernommen:
The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good.
oder auch
Keep in mind that the true measure of an individual is how he treats a person who can do him absolutely no good.
1993 sagte der amerikanische Football Coach Dan Reeves
Character is the most important factor, I don’t care if you are a player or coach.You can tell the character of a person by how he treats those who can do nothing for him. If you do something for somebody and they can’t do anything for you, that says a lot about you as a person.
Die vielen möglichen Quellen und Abwandlungen zeigen, wie wichtig der dahinter stehende Grundgedanke ist und es wäre schön, wenn das Zitat auch in Deutschland mehr Verbreitung fände.
